“Should I start a podcast?”
Listen to the full episode here:
This is a question we hear often.
What it really comes down to is a lack of clarity and certainty.
Folks want to know that this is going to be an effective effort for their business and brand.
They don’t want to waste their time when they could have been doing something else.
At the end of the day, we find that individuals come into this phase with mixed emotions.
They’ve been wanting to do this show for months and they’ve been mulling over how they can put it into action.
There is also a big fear of missing out.
They’ve seen others in their industry launch successful podcasts and they have seen the amazing things it has done for their organizations.
Some businesses are doing some really cool podcasts and they’re putting their stuff out there.
It’s going well for some and not so well for others.
What it comes down to is getting clarity around whether podcasting is the right tool for you and your organization.
There are a few key indicators that can show us, before we even start this podcast process, whether or not you are in the right position to leverage podcasting fully.
We want to figure out if you can take advantage of the natural strengths that podcasting as a channel has.
To help you find out if podcasting is right for you, we have put together a 60-second quiz that will answer the question “is podcasting a good idea for me?”
It will give you instant clarity around if this will be the right path for you and your organization.
So, let’s talk about three of the indicators in that test.
Should You Start A Podcast Indicator #1
The first indicator is if you are starting to already build and grow an audience or community around a very definable niche.
A perfect example of this is a client of ours, Michael Kitces.
He works with financial advisors who are looking to break out on their own and start their own financial advisory firm.
His audience is very definable.
He already has people on an email list and a social following.
You don’t need a massive audience, you simply need a very clear group of people that you help and you’ve already started to build some community there.
So that’s indicator number one.
Do you have a clearly defined audience that you know you can help and serve? Are you already serving them?
Should You Start A Podcast Indicator #2
The next indicator is that you have a product, service, or offering that helps those people get tangible results.
You’re no longer in the beginning phases where you’re trying to figure out what your offers are.
You’re no longer trying to figure out how you actually work with folks.
You’ve figured out the challenges and problems that your ideal audience faces, and you know how to get them results.
If you have that next step offer or solution that you can share with people, that’s a huge indicator that podcasting is going to be a great tool for you.
You won’t have to rely on sponsorships and classic monetization models. The podcast can become a great client generator for you.
Should You Start A Podcast Indicator #3
The third indicator is if you see yourself being an active leader in your community or within your industry for the next 2-5 years.
Podcasting is not an overnight strategy.
It’s not like Facebook Ads where you can put 10$ in today and reap the benefits by tomorrow.
It is a long-term, consistent, momentum strategy where you’re going to build a really strong community around your brand and a strong relationship with your community members.
The real pay-offs with podcasting build over time and they become exponential as time goes on.
So, if you see yourself being an active leader and community member over time, podcasting is right in alignment with what you’re trying to do.
Those are the first three indicators that you are in the right position for podcasting.
If you’re unsure of what to do next, go check out our podcast quiz HERE.
It will give you an idea of how well-positioned you are and how effective you are likely to be with podcasting as a community-building channel.
