When you’re starting something new, such as a podcast, it’s easy to get hung up on the things that you don’t know.

This uncertainty often leads to procrastination or anxiety around starting a show.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

There are common podcast planning mistakes that can be easily avoided by simply following along with this guide today.

However, before jumping into these common podcast planning mistakes, it’s essential that you understand the importance of advocating for your audience.

Think of your podcast as an opportunity to be a guide, coach or educator for your audience.

This will truly make all of the difference.

If you adopt that mindset as you begin planning your podcast and begin using that as a metric for every decision that you make, you really can’t go wrong.

That is genuinely the only piece that matters.

Be a good educator and advocate for your audience and your podcast is already ahead of the rest.

Podcast Planning Mistake #1

Thinking it’s all about YOU

podcast planning mistakes to avoid

You believe your show is about you.

Oftentimes people will begin their show and not focus on what their audience wants.

Instead, they only focus on themselves as the host.

When you’re making decisions about any area of your podcast, you have to think from your audience’s perspective.

Have a clear definition of who your audience is and create your show for them.

This way when people come across your show, they’ll feel like it is for them.

So, always make decisions from your audience’s perspective first.

Podcast Planning Mistake #2

Build it and they will come

planning your podcast

You think that because you’ve created a podcast, people will listen.

In order for your show to grow, you need to promote it, share it on social and ensure that people know about it.

Your podcast will not grow simply because you’ve created it.

Unfortunately, it isn’t that easy.

Podcasting is like rolling a snowball down a hill.

If you can pack an initial snowball (followers) and start rolling it down the hill (time) it will eventually get some momentum going and grow on its own.

But there needs to be an initial grouping in order to get there.

If you have an email list, a client list, or a social following, start with promoting to them.

Any communities that you’re a part of, promote your new show there.

This will be your initial snowball.

From there, your business podcast will grow.

Podcast Planning Mistake #3

Not providing a clear call to action

how to plan your podcast

You assume that you can’t sell through your podcast.

You are educating, supporting, and advocating for your audience through this podcast and then you are giving them clear next steps on where they can go when they need more help.

So, in this way, you aren’t selling, you are thinking about what your audience could benefit from next.

For example, our go-to lead magnet is our book called Podcast Strategies.

Podcast Strategies: How to Create the Perfect Business Podcast

It’s all about the strategies we have discovered through working with clients and producing hundreds of episodes.

This is a perfect next step for someone if they’re wanting to learn more about podcast planning mistakes to avoid.

It will guide you through what you should and should not do when creating your show.

At the end of the day, these are the three most common podcast planning mistakes that we see.

With any of these three erroneous mindsets, the podcast is not an effective marketing tool.

What you want to do instead is:

  1. Define your target audience and what their needs are
  2. Promote your podcast via email, social media, networking, and grassroots efforts
  3. Give your audience a clear call to action to take the next step in their journey

This way your show will flourish.
