You’ve purchased a microphone and recorded your first batch of episodes.

The raw unedited audio has a lot of great information, but now you need to make it sound professional.

But where do you even get started with podcast editing and production?

For many people, the editing side of podcasting is what stops them from ever starting in the first place.

The technology seems too daunting and there is so much conflicting information on the internet it’s hard to know where to begin.

This is why we’re going to keep it simple for you today.

You really have two options when it comes to editing:

  1. Do it yourself.
  2. Have someone help you do it in some capacity.

Let’s dive into what this looks like.

The Do-It-Yourself Approach To Podcast Editing

podcast production

Executing the podcast editing and production yourself comes down to software.

This entails using your software to weave in your intros and outros and edit out any of the unwanted areas of your episode.

A great tool for this is Audacity.

Audacity is free, it works on Macs and PCs, and it’s relatively easy to use.

If you’re starting from scratch, we’d recommend doing a quick Google search of how to use Audacity, and plenty of YouTube options will come up.

Another great tool for beginners is Auphonic.

This is an AI-based software tool that can assemble your episode for you in a basic sense.

It will not remove the “um’s” and “ah’s” or any unnecessary space but it will put your intro and outro in for you.

If you don’t have a lot of time and your tech skills aren’t super sharp, this is a great way to produce your own podcast.

Hiring A Team For Your Podcast Editing

production services

At the end of the day, it is a trade-off of time and money.

If you’re doing it yourself, you’re investing time whereas if you’re having someone do it for you, you’re investing money.

If you decide to hire someone to do some of the work for you, there are again two options:

1. You hire a podcast producer or a podcast editor. This is usually an individual.
2. You hire a podcast production service. This is generally a team of people.

Choosing to hire a podcast production service is a great option for those looking to take a more hands-off approach.

They may be more expensive but they will generally take care of everything so that all you have to do is record your episodes.
