All right, I’m excited today because I’m going to answer for you a question that I get all the time. It’s probably the question that I get asked more than any other question out there and it is this; what podcasting microphone do I need to use to get started, where I can get pretty good audio quality without dropping a bunch of coin.

I’m Ben Krueger and this is Authority Engine TV, where I am dedicated to helping you grow your small business using the power of podcast marketing every Thursday morning. All right, so I’m excited to answer this question for you because a lot of people get confused. They’re scared that if I want really good audio quality I might have to drop a bunch of money on a Heil PR40; 300 bucks and I’ve got to get a mixing board and I got to get all this stuff.

That’s a horror psyche; you donâ’t need all that stuff. I’m going to get you set up here and I’m going to give you the exact microphone that I recommend for all of our clients that go through our podcast launch program, and for all of our ongoing editing clients that want good audio quality, but there’s no real reason to drop that kind of coin unless you’ve got this whole studio set up and all that stuff.

Let’s talk here real quick about the Audio-Technica ATR2100. This little baby is absolutely fantastic and I love it. This little baby is incredible to use and I absolutely love it, and I’m going to give you a couple of reasons why. Number one, it is a USB microphone. In order to set it up, we’ve got a USB, we’ve got our laptop here. It doesn’t matter if you’re using Mac or if you’re using Windows, or if you’re using Linux, whatever, as long as you have a USB, this microphone will work for you. All you have to do to set it up is literally plug it in and it has its own driver, so it will set itself up. The, you’re ready to go; you’re ready to record already. It’s got a little on/off switch here, but there are no complicated settings; none of that kind of stuff to where you don’t have to deal with all of that stuff.

The next thing, on the bottom you will see that it also has a port if you do have a mixing board and you want to use a little bit more advanced cords, and you want to use all that kind of stuff to get better audio quality, but that’s not going to make a very big difference, particularly for this mic.

The next feature is it’s got a little headphone jack, where you can plug your headphones and you can listen to your own voice, you own recording on here and see what kind of an audio quality you’re getting on the fly.

Then, the final piece is it comes with this sweet little microphone stand. I know this thing doesn’t look like anything too crazy, and it’s not, but what’s awesome about it is that it folds up and then the entire microphone package goes into just this little thing. I put it into this tiny a pocket in my backpack, and it fits in there just perfectly.

The other reasons why I like it, number one, it travels well. Number two, it’s very easy to set up; there’s not complicated settings and that kind of stuff. Number three, it sounds incredible, and here’s a little example of how it sounds.

This is a perfect example of the audio quality that you can expect from an Audio-Technica ATR2100. You can tell that it picks up the sound very well. You can see that I’ve got a little pop filter on it, which helps get rid of some of the plosives, some of the Ps and Bs and those kinds of sounds. However, you can also tell that the deep richness in the tones is there. It captures that full spectrum of audio without a lot of background noise. That’s a solid example of what you can expect from the ATR2100.

The final reason that I really like this microphone is it’s cheap. It’s much cheaper than going with some of the higher end really expensive microphones, and it’s a little bit more, or might be in the same range as some of the headsets, but you’re going to get a lot better audio quality doing so. If you’re getting started podcasting, and you want to get a microphone that will get you really good audio quality without spending the big bucks, the ATR2100 Audio-Technica is your microphone.
